News and coverage
We monitor more than 75 local and Texas news sources, including the San Antonio Express-News, San Antonio Report, KSAT, KENS5, Fox San Antonio, the San Antonio Current, Texas Public Radio, the Texas Tribune, Texas Monthly, and outlets across the state.
We don't republish full articles. We extract metadata — publication, date, byline, topic, named entities — and short excerpts for analysis. Readers click through to the original outlets.

Refresh cadence
News coverage is refreshed continuously throughout the day. Campaign finance updates whenever the Texas Ethics Commission posts new filings, typically monthly during reporting periods. Government meeting data is added within 24 hours of posting.
How we structure data
Entity extraction
Every story is processed through an entity extraction pipeline that identifies people, organizations, and locations. This lets us link a news mention to a council member's profile, a contractor's permit history, or a neighborhood's coverage trend.
Story clustering
Related stories from different outlets are grouped into clusters using semantic similarity. This lets us show how the same event was covered across multiple sources, and surface coverage gaps where only one outlet reported a story.
Bias and source diversity
For each story cluster, we flag outlet political leanings (drawn from established media bias datasets), source diversity (number of distinct outlets covering), and framing differences (where outlets emphasize different facts).
We do not assign a single "bias score" to a story. We show readers which outlets covered it, with what framing, and let them assess.
Editorial ranking
Stories and clusters are ranked by a combination of local impact, novelty, source diversity, bias divergence, and civic importance. This is editorial — we make choices about what surfaces. The ranking weights are documented at /ranking.
What we don't do
We don't write original news. We aggregate and analyze.
We don't republish full articles. We link to the original sources.
We don't sell user data, run advertising tied to user behavior, or share email lists.
We don't take political positions. We don't endorse candidates. We don't accept political advertising.
We don't claim to be neutral on every question. We have an editorial point of view about what matters in civic life — that public data should be researchable, that money in politics should be visible, and that local government deserves the same scrutiny as federal politics. Those views shape what we build, not what we say happened.
